Effort to Establish NSBE Chapter at Addis Ababa University (NSBE-AAU):

Phase I Summary by Sintayehu Dehnie

In the initiative to establish NSBE in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa University (AAU) is chosen strategically due to its historical significance as the oldest higher education institution in the country and one of the oldest (if not the oldest) modern African Universities. Once NSBE-AAU is established, it will take the leadership of establishing Chapters in the other higher education institutions. Faculty of Technology of AAU, one of the well established Engineering schools in the country, is leading the current NSBE-AAU effort at AAU.

The Effort at Faculty of Technology

As a first step we had one-to-one meeting the Heads of the Departments to brief them about NSBE and its mission statement. We also briefed them on the benefit of having a NSBE chapter in Ethiopia. A brief meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Technology was also arranged. All the key people we talked to seemed enthusiastic about NSBE-AAU. We seized this opportunity and called a meeting to introduced NSBE to the Faculty of Technology.

Considering the short notice of the first meeting, there was good attendance by faculty, undergraduate and graduate students. The meeting began by introducing the Mission of NSBE. We talked about history of NSBE, its organizational structure and the governing documents. The presentation was well received by the attendees who suggested that a general body meeting be called to introduce NSBE a larger audience. Thus, we called the first general body meeting to reach out all students and faculty. This time we had a poster of the meeting and announcement was posted at different locations within the Faculty of Technology.

The first general body meeting was held on January 30, 2009 at the Auditorium. The meeting was attended by more than 40 students and a few faculty members. We began the meeting by reading NSBE’s mission statement. The presentation in this meeting was more detailed. The presentation included history of NSBE (The Chicago Six), organizational structure, NSBE budget, duties and responsibilities of each NSBE officer etc. Highlights of Chapter activities at NYU-Poly and Ghana were presented. We emphasized the work of NSBE-Ghana to motivate the audience.

Addis Ababa University —National Society of Black Engineers
The initiative to launch a NSBE chapter held its second meeting on the AAU campus on January 30th 2009. Coordinated by Sintayehu Dehnie (Ph.D NYU:Poly) and Michael Asrat (Post graduate AAU), the initiative took a new turn, when they talked to the dean, faculty members and signed up forty students to join the initiative. The presentation went well with the audience, and most have also put forward their names to take on a leadership role.
It is not the time for a Mission Accomplished, but we have reached a milestone to move forward.

We have confirmed four students and an advisor for the NSBE initiative in Addis Ababa University. All are post graduate students from the civil, the chemical and electrical engineering departments.
One of our own, Sintayehu Dehnie will also be traveling to Addis Ababa, and he has set out to put some major force behind this initiative. We will wish him the very best, and want him to know that we are behind him every step of the way.

Action Plan

Filed under: NSBE — admin @ 12:34 am
  • The first five students and a faculty adivisor will fill the officers positions.
  • Each of the student, now officers, will bring in one more member and the faculty will also invite one more faculty or staff to join. The goal is multiplication and not addition.
  • The ten students with two advisors will form the founding members.
  • Our representative will travel to work with the officers to complete the following requirements.
  • Explain how NSBE works and its workable goals in AAU.
  • Layout the responsibilities of each officer position.
  1. President must put forward an action plan and calender on establishing and increasing the membership of the chapter.
  2. The Vice President must inform and gain as many faculty, staff, and administration support as possible.
  3. The secretary must complete all documents required by the NSBE Nationals.
  4. The treasurer must read the financial responsibilities of the chapter, and put forward a budget proposal.
  • The ten members and two faculty will sign up on NSBE Online to officially register the chapter.
  • The formation of a NSBE Center in the University will be a priority as a center of communication, resource, and research. The cost for the room and web access will be studied. This cost and the first round of membership registration fee ($10) will be fundraisers in the US. The center will have a physical presence in the university to attract students, and will have a direct impact towards a members activity. All financial donations, book donations, project proposal, chapter adoption proposals, and research initiatives will be directed towards the chapter officers.
  • I will apply for a chapter assistance with the NSBE Nationals to help with the NSBE Center and the expansion of NSBE in Ethiopia. I will also work with Ethiopian institution and businesses in New York City and Washington DC to raise funds for the chapter.
  • After securing these funds or grants, we will organize Ethio-NSBE member in the US and Europe to start adopting other chapters. (This is due on the National Convention in LasVegas, Nevada)
